In the Category of Good Books We Couldn’t Finish…

 Mrs. Dalloway

I’m reluctant to admit that I couldn’t finish Virginia Woolf’s, ‘Mrs. Dalloway’.  While I enjoyed ‘A Room of One’s Own’  I found the stream of conciousness style of ‘Mrs. Dalloway’  strangely distancing.  While I know that the novel is an important innovation to literature and many believe Woolf’s indictment of the status of women from that time,  I just couldn’t sustain an interest in the character of Mrs. Dalloway.  Her life and concerns seem mundane and I found it difficult to relate to her life or choices.

New Post Category for the Reading Room in Sooke

book reviewThe Reading Room Bookstore in Sooke is starting a brand new category on this blog…

“Good Books We Couldn’t Finish”

Not only will we, the staff of The Reading Room Bookstore in Sooke post the books we couldn’t finish and why, but we encourage all our readers to do the same, and see your name in print.

Comments are encouraged to engage in some fun and dynamic online conversation, especially if your opinions vary.

Often, two people can read the same book with varying reviews of how they found it….we have now given you a place and format in which to share and reach out to your fellow readers from Sooke and beyond :)

To start things off, our first “Good Books We Couldn’t Finish” comes from our constant and die-hard contributor, Laura Allard aka( @WifeLA if you are following us on twitter) and the book is…

Title:The Continuity Girl

by: Leah McLaren

Not Finished Because: although the jacket claims McLaren to be Canada’s Carrie Bradshaw, there just wasn’t the same character draw or character envy Bradshaw/Bushnell can elicit from readers. 20 somethings might be engaged, but as I was beyond that when I first picked up the book, I chose to return it to the bookshelf in my office, and am now considering taking it in to the Reading Room Bookstore in Sooke…watch for it by the end of the month :)

LA :)

Want to get in on the action…write a little blurb in the same format, sharing the name of the book, the author and the reason you couldn’t finish said Good Book, and email it along to rrsooke at gmail.com

Looking forward to hearing from you soon…and please do comment with your opinions!!

What Fun!!
