Arrows by Luisa Maria Celis

004

Luisa Maria Celis read from her book “Arrows” last Saturday to an engaged and interactive audience at the Reading Room Cafe.

The first book in a proposed Trilogy, “Arrows” follows the journey of a young priest named Salvador as he experiences atrocity and love in Venezuela while endeavoring to establish the city of Caracas.

Celis had her audience intrigued with the chapters she read from which included a rather detailed account of barbecued spider for dinner :) . Her passion for the subject was truly apparent as she answered many questions and shared stories of her researching and writing the book, and why she chose the topic she did.

Celis also makes history with  “Arrows”, with it being the first novel written and published in English by a Venezuelan.

The crowd was a buzz after the reading wanting to know more about Luisa’s upcoming works and keep the author around a little longer as her company was so enjoyable. Many books were signed in the wake of the reading, held closely and cherished as alas the time did come for everyone to proceed with their day.

007The Reading Room Bookstore and Cafe was very pleased by the turn out for this reading, and Thanks the attendees for their heart felt support of our mission to give local talent a venue by which to promote their works.

We also send our immense Thanks to the author, for her time and genuine sincerity, look forward to the publication of the next book in this Trilogy, and wish Luisa much success, while sending her the spirit of a good muse to guide her along the way.

Arrows Reading: May 30th

arrowsJoin Luisa Maria Celis as she reads from her new novel, Arrows

Saturday May 30th, Reading Room Cafe, Sooke

Time: 3:30pm

ARROWS: Based on the chronicles of José de Oviedo y Baños, a colonial historian, Luisa Maria Celis’ deeply moving, action-packed novel realistically depicts the subjugation of indigenous peoples, but it is also a love story of hope and the possibilities for redemption. The setting is Venezuela, but the context is the human heart.

luisaBIOGRAPHY: Luisa Maria was born in Caracas, Venezuela and moved to Canada in 2000. Arrows was written over a nine-year-period and required extensive research in South America. “More of this story is true than most people will want to believe,” she says, “which explains why I had to write it.”

PRAISE: “I am astonished by Arrows. Here is a quintessential conquest novel for all three Americas—North, Central and South.” —Alan Twigg, BC Bookworld
